Dance Photography in Punta Gorda, Fl.

For those of you who follow my blog posts you know I have a thing for photographing dancers, mainly because I have no sense of rhythm and they look amazing and elegant!

I recently ran a model call that involved a dancer throwing colored chalk (which I have since found out is actually corn starch! Who knew?!), if you missed that post you can find it here. It’s definitely worth checking out because my favorite image from that session was included in a digital publication for their top 10 color photography category.

I had so much fun that I decided that I wanted to try it again with a different style of dance and that’s where Ireland comes in! Ireland is a beautiful 12 year old who has been dancing for 8 years. She is extremely talented and she dances ballet, contemporary, tap, jazz, lyrical and hip hop. She is even starring in the upcoming Nutcracker performance at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center (CPAC).

I decided it would be interesting to do a hip hop style session and I wanted an urban location to suit the dance type. It took me a while to come up with it but I eventually decided it would be on the top of a parking garage. Ireland’s Mom mentioned that she had recently learned to go en pointe for ballet and would it be possible to take some photos of her showcasing her new skill? The chance to photograph two different dance styles in one session? Why not?

We started out with the ballet portraits first, unfortunately for Ireland it was one of those rare Florida mornings when the temperature is in the 40s but she was such a great sport and just went with it. We switched to hip hop and took various poses around the lot. We did try to do some ‘chalk’ shots but unfortunately it was a little too windy so they didn’t really work out.
